Vodacom has announced that it has reached an out-of-court settlement with “Please Call Me” inventor, Nkosana Makate.
The company however did not reveal the final settlement amount and only highlighted that it might be revealed when it releases its interim results next week Wednesday.
“Shareholders are hereby advised that on 4 November 2025, the Vodacom board approved a settlement agreement, and the matter was settled by the parties out of court. The parties are glad that finality has been reached in this regard. The settlement has been accounted for in the group’s interim results for the six-month period ended 30 September 2025, subsequent to the publication of a trading statement on SENS on 31 October 2025 related to those interim results,” read a statement from the company.
Meanwhile, Makate confirmed the settlement on his X account.
“In response to media queries. Indeed, the ‘Please Call Me’ matter has been settled and is subject to confidentiality,” read the message.
Furthermore, the company said as part of the settlement, a notice was sent to the Supreme Court of Appeal withdrawing its appeal, and a notice was also sent to the High Court to abandon the 8 February 2022 judgment.
The legal wrangle has been ongoing for the past 17-years, with Vodacom only offering what it termed a reasonable amount of R47 million, while Makate was demanding around R10 billion.
