Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has expressed relief following the arrest of a 54-year-old suspect linked to a tragic shooting incident that occurred on campus during protests on Tuesday, which left one student dead and several others injured. This incident has sparked significant unrest within the university community, necessitating urgent action from the university’s council.
The university council convened on Wednesday night, during which they implemented several key resolutions aimed at addressing the aftermath of the violence. Notably, the WSU Registrar, Dr Lulamile Ntonzima, announced that a decision was made to suspend a staff member involved in the incident, reflecting a commitment to accountability within the institution.
In a move to further resolve tensions, the council decided to terminate the contract with the security company that was accused of exacerbating the conflict with students. This step highlights the urgency for reform in the university’s approach to handling protests and disturbances, fostering a peaceful academic environment.
Additionally, to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the unrest, the university council has mandated the establishment of an independent inquiry. This inquiry will be headed by the esteemed retired judge of the Constitutional Court, Justice Christopher Jafta Nyaole, bringing with it an assurance of impartiality and thorough investigation into the events that transpired.
The arrested suspect is expected to appear in court next Tuesday, a development that the university council views as a step towards justice and healing for the affected community. The tragic loss of young lives during campus protests underscores the critical need for dialogue and understanding in addressing the underlying issues that sparked the unrest.
