South Africa’s rising star in the 400 metres, Zakithi Nene, has clinched a spot in the final of the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, showcasing remarkable speed and determination. The 27-year-old athlete from uMnambithi, KwaZulu-Natal, crossed the finish line in a swift 44.20 seconds in the first of three semifinals, earning him the fifth fastest qualifying time of the event.

The standout performance not only signifies Nene’s prowess on the track but places him squarely in contention for a medal on Thursday afternoon, when the final race of the event will take place. Leading the heat with an impressive finish of 43.61 seconds was Botswana’s Busang Collen Kebinatshibi, who emerged as the fastest qualifier from the third semifinal.

With Nene’s impressive record and determination, fans and analysts alike are looking forward to an exciting final, one that promises to spotlight the best of African athletics. Nene’s journey to this point has been marked by hard work and dedication, making his breakthrough in Tokyo a testament to his commitment to the sport and his ambition to elevate South African athletics on the global stage.

In another highlight of the championships, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon dominated the women’s 1500 metres, claiming victory with a time of 3 minutes, 52.15 seconds.
