The Department of Transport has announced the successful procurement of about 121.1 million litres of jet fuel for the OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park.
It also indicated this will assist with jet fuel shortages that were caused by the closure of the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (NATREF), due to a fire early this month.
The department spokesperson Collen Msibi says an urgent meeting by Minister Barbara Creecy and relevant stakeholders held discussions on the matter.
“Last Friday, Creecy held a meeting with fuel industry stakeholders.
Parties agreed that it is necessary to build a fuel reserve to serve as a critical safety buffer for unforeseen circumstances such as delays, diversions or unexpected changes in flight conditions”, Msibi explained.
The fire incident caused a disruption on national fuel production, and airlines were concerned that their reserves would not make it until February.
Furthermore, Msibi added that plans to move the fuel to the airport will get underway.
“The fuel will be imported through the Port of Durban via three vessels expected to arrive on the 1st and 10th of February 2025”, he indicated.
The department has thanked those affected by the shortages, including passengers and businesses for their patience during this time.
