With the passing of jazz music legend Gloria Bosman, who was born in Soweto, tributes from the South African people flooded in on Wednesday.

Her family claimed in a press release on Tuesday afternoon that the 50-year-old passed away at her home, surrounded by family, after a brief illness. Gloria Bosman, who gained notoriety for her deep and comforting voice, was the “rock of our family” and was lost in the early hours of today morning, according the statement.

She was also a cherished mother, grandmother, and sister. She passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, after a brief illness.

According to the family, Bosman dedicated her life to her family and her music. She was adored and cherished by many people in South Africa and abroad.

In a press release, the African National Congress claimed that Bosman belonged to the generation of outstanding female artists who refused to conform to patriarchal preconceptions in a field that was predominately male.

The statement added, “She was a fierce and militant revolutionary in the creative industry. Without Gloria Bosman’s lyrical contributions, society as a whole and the performing arts sector suffer.

Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, a friend and fellow musician of Bosman, complimented her for opening up the stage and sharing her talent with everyone. He continued, saying her passing had left him broken.
