The graves of the 69 victims of the Sharpeville massacre are located at the cemetery. At a 1960 demonstration against pass laws, apartheid police opened fire, injuring over 180 additional people.

To commemorate 63 years since the tragic tragedy, political parties want to share the cemetery. Herman Mashaba and Gauteng chairperson Funzi Ngobeni will speak at a wreath-laying ceremony. The Pan Africanist Congress and Azapo will also conduct commemorative activities.
