As the festive season approaches, the South African Government is intensifying efforts to prevent crime and ensure the safety of communities, visitors and holidaymakers.
The North West provincial police leadership, accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Police and the MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, has officially launched the province’s 2026/2027 Safer Festive Season Operations, signalling a firm stance against crime ahead of the holidays.
The launch took place at Lehurutshe Sports Ground, near Zeerust, marking a province-wide deployment of law enforcement officers to protect residents, tourists and businesses during the high-risk festive period.
Running from 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, the initiative prioritises crime prevention through an increased police presence, targeted interventions against violent crime and regulatory inspections of second-hand goods dealers and liquor outlets.
North West police spokesperson Colonel Thuto Bobelo said the targeted crimes include murder, rape, gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), aggravated robbery, car hijacking and the proliferation of illegal firearms.
According to Bobelo, North West Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Adams assured residents and visitors that the police in the province were ready to implement measures to safeguard communities throughout the festive period.
“He warned criminals that law enforcement agencies would maintain a strong presence across the province and take decisive action against those involved in criminal activities.
“Furthermore, he called on members of the public to remain vigilant, report criminal activities and work with law enforcement agencies to ensure a safer festive season for everyone,” Bobelo said.
Meanwhile, North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management Tsotso Virginia Tlhapi reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies. She also urged communities to work closely with the police and other stakeholders in the fight against crime.
“As the provincial commissioner has alluded to, the primary focus area for the North West province is the Bojanala Platinum District, particularly Rustenburg. It is the largest city in the province, and we are all aware that its specific security challenges stem from the surrounding mines.
“While this remains a primary focus, our second key area of focus is Stilfontein, within the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. This does not mean we will neglect other districts; our police presence will remain active and widespread across the entire province,” Tlhapi said.
The province demonstrated resilience during the previous festive season, successfully curbing road fatalities and avoiding the upward trend recorded in several other provinces.
Nationally, 1,427 fatalities were recorded across 1,172 crashes, with the country reporting its lowest number of holiday crashes in five years.
