“Are you aware of what you did to our lives? Are you guys aware of what you did to us as a family on that day?” These were questions an emotion Zandile Khumalo posed to the five men accused of killing Bafana Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa when she took the stand on Thursday.

Khumalo, the fifth state witness, took the stand to give her version of events of what happened the night Meyiwa was killed at her home in Vorsloorus in 2014.

Zandile, her sister Kelly, their mother Gladness Khumalo, Longwe Twala, Meyiwa’s two friends Tumelo Madlala and Mthokozisi Thwala were in the house on the night Meyiwa was shot and killed allegedly by two intruders.

Khumalo said while they were listening to Kelly speak, two men entered the house.

“That one there in particular pointing at accused number two Bongani Ntanzi0. Are you guys even aware of what you did to our lives? Are you guys aware of what you did to us as a family on that day? The damage that you guys caused,” wailed Khumalo.

The defense Attorney, Sipho Ramosepele objected to Khumalo addressing the men on trial arguing that she must address the court.

State prosecutor George Baloyi asked Khumalo to identify one of the intruders and refrain from addressing the men on trial directly.

George Baloyi: “ Ma’am you are still in the process of identifying the person who came into the house. If you can just do that and refrain from further comments. You were pointing to someone.”

Khumalo identified accused number two Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi as one of the intruders who was in the house.

“Yes, he was one of the people who came into the house but he was behind. It was the second one there,” said Khumalo.

The five men on trial are Muzika Ukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli have all pleaded not guilty to the murder.

Yesterday, Zandile Khumalo said she will not appeal the Judgement allowing the media to broadcast her testimony after her initial attempt on Monday to bar journalists from covering the trial during her testimony.

But the North Gauteng High court granted the media permission to broadcast her testimony only through audio while visuals are not allowed.

Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela granted the media permission to record the proceedings with the following provisions:

  • 1. That the live broadcast of the image of the witness that is witness number one will not be permitted.
  • 2. That members of the electronic media are permitted to live broadcast the testimony of witness number one by means of audio. I might just add that the prohibition of images of witness numbers one as she testify shall remain in place until the finalisation of this case.
