Three learners have been admitted at the Joe Morolong Hospital in Vryburg, North West, after their scholar bus transport was involved in an accident in Liliefontein. According to the Department of Education, late yesterday (Thursday) after the bus tyre burst.
At the time of the incident, there were 18 learners on board, as some had already disembarked at their homes. Fifteen learners received trauma counselling at the local hospital. It was revealed that four individuals sustained serious injuries, including fractures to their legs and arms.
The driver has also sustained serious injuries. As a result of the severity of their injuries, three learners are currently hospitalised at the Joe Morolong Hospital in Vryburg,” said the department spokesperson, Mphata Molokwane. Meanwhile, the MEC for Education Viola Motsumi has urged all scholar transport operators to exercise caution and expressed concern that the number of scholar transport accidents continue to
rise in the province.
“I urge our operators to ensure that their buses are roadworthy, adhere to speed limits, and carry a limited number of passengers to prevent accidents,” urged Motsumi.
The department said it’ll provide support to those affected, the psychosocial team will continue to offer counselling sessions to the learners. Continuous care and assistance during this critical time are essential.
