Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has defended the government’s R516 million allocation to the Madlanga, Khampepe and Nkabinde commissions of inquiry, citing progress in the Madlanga investigation, including 32 arrests.

The funding was announced on Wednesday as part of the 2026 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS), which included a R45.5 billion increase in expenditure compared with the February budget.

Responding to questions about the spending, Godongwana highlighted the Madlanga Commission’s reporting structure, which requires quarterly reports and recommendations rather than waiting until the end of its mandate.

“If you look at the Madlanga Commission, how it was designed, it was spectacular; for the first time we have got a commission which is not given a year or so to report,” he said.

The minister also pointed to the establishment of a technical committee supporting the process.

“32 people have been arrested. What more do we want?” Godongwana asked, defending the allocation.

The funding places the spotlight on the government’s commitment to supporting the commissions as they carry out their work. The allocation also comes amid broader spending adjustments outlined in the latest budget statement.
