Benni McCarthy appointed new head coach of Kenya

Former Manchester United assistant coach Benni McCarthy has been announced as the new head coach of Kenya. The 47-year-old signed a two-year deal with the Harambee Stars until the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The former Bafana Bafana striker was unveiled during a media briefing in the capital, Nairobi.

“It’s been an absolute privilege and pleasure to be here in Kenya. I am delighted, and I can’t really wait to start our new journey, making Kenya again one of the powerhouses in Africa,” said McCarthy.

His last stint was at the end of last season as a first-team coach at Manchester United. The east African country is ranked 108 in the FIFA world rankings and are currently fourth in their World Cup qualification group.McCarthy’s technical team is made up of South Africans, with Vasili Manousakis as assistant coach, goalkeeper coach Moeneeb Josephs an analyst Pilela Maposa.

“Together with my coaching team, we are committed to building a structured, disciplined and competitive squad. Our goal is to develop a strong team identity, play exciting football and make the nation proud,” remarked McCarthy. His first game in will be later this month in a World Cup qualifier away in The Gambia in two weeks’ time, and at home against Gabon.
