South Africans will see a decrease in fuel prices this week, with petrol down by 51 cents per litre and diesel by up to 21 cents, thanks to a stronger rand and lower global oil prices.

Motorists can breathe a sigh of relief at the petrol pumps, after the department of Mineral and Petroleum announced a fuel decrease from the 5th of March.

This is the first decrease in five months, following four increases by the department since last year.

“Both grades of petrol will decrease by 7 cents a litre.

Diesel will decrease by 17.5 and 23.5 cents a litre.

Paraffin will decrease by 8c per litre at the retail level, and LP gas will decrease by 2 cents per kilogram,” said the department spokesperson Robert Maake.

According to Maake, the prices adjustment is due to several factors, both locally and internationally.

“The slightly lower oil prices on average, compared to the previous period.

The stronger rand against the dollar, which contributed to a decrease by about 13 cents on petrol and 14 cents on both diesel and LP.

The slate levy remains unchanged at zero cents per litre in the price structures of petrol and diesel.

And LP decreases from 1 cent to 0.5 cents per litre,” explained Maake.

The fuel prices schedule for the different zones will be published on Tuesday.
