US President Donald Trump has embarked on a flight from Washington to Anchorage, Alaska, setting the stage for a pivotal peace summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Touted as a high-stakes engagement, the talks are poised to commence at 9pm South African time, with Trump characterising the upcoming discussions as akin to a chess game, filled with intricate strategies and significant consequences.

This summit is notably historic as it marks Putin’s first visit to US soil in nearly a decade, reigniting diplomatic dialogues that have been largely stagnant since his meeting with former President Joe Biden in Geneva in June 2021. That meeting occurred shortly before Russia’s ground invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, an act that has led to Putin being wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes, specifically for the unlawful deportation of thousands of Ukrainian children.

As Trump arrives with the ambition of paving the way for additional talks—including a future meeting that features Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy—the backdrop of the ongoing war looms large. The American president, keenly aware of the international scrutiny surrounding the summit, took to Truth Social to label the negotiations “high stakes,” indicating that he aims to prioritise efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine.

A crucial aspect of the talks will be the potential for broad economic discussions between Washington and Moscow, a topic that underscores the complex intertwining of geopolitical stability and economic relations. Earlier remarks from Trump suggested that territorial swaps could be considered as part of any resolution to the conflict. This suggestion, however, has been met with resistance from Ukraine and its European allies, who have voiced their concerns regarding territorial concessions and the implications for Ukrainian sovereignty.
