Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the only man convicted in connection with the murder of American rap icon Tupac Shakur, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison, nearly three decades after the rapper was fatally shot in Las Vegas.

A judge handed down the sentence in Las Vegas after Davis was convicted in August of organising the 1996 attack that claimed the life of the influential hip-hop star.

Davis received two consecutive sentences of 20 years to life, meaning he must serve at least 40 years before becoming eligible for parole.

Prosecutors link shooting to earlier assault

Prosecutors argued that Davis organised the shooting in retaliation for an incident in September 1996, when Shakur and members of his entourage assaulted Davis’s nephew.

The fatal shooting occurred later that month in Las Vegas, when Shakur was 25 years old. Despite his death, the rapper’s music and cultural influence have continued to shape hip-hop across generations.

The investigation into Shakur’s murder remained unresolved for years before authorities arrested Davis in 2023, nearly 27 years after the shooting.

Interviews and memoir featured in prosecution

Davis’s own statements in interviews and a memoir played a central role in the prosecution’s case.

However, his defence argued that he had fabricated the accounts to generate money, challenging the credibility of his statements.

The case attracted widespread attention because of the lengthy period between Shakur’s murder and Davis’s arrest, as well as the renewed scrutiny surrounding one of hip-hop’s most notorious killings.

Tupac’s family calls for maximum sentence

During the sentencing proceedings, two of Shakur’s siblings delivered emotional testimonies and urged the court to impose the maximum sentence.

Their statements reflected the lasting impact of the rapper’s death on his family, nearly 30 years after he was killed.

Shakur, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in rap music, was just 25 when he died. His murder has remained a subject of public interest and speculation for decades.

Davis plans to appeal conviction

Davis has indicated that he intends to appeal his conviction.

The sentence marks a significant development in the long-running legal case surrounding Shakur’s death. However, Davis’s planned appeal means further legal proceedings could follow as the case continues through the judicial system.
