As fear spreads within the community of Roodepoort, the recent violence between local high schools spots a worrying trend of escalating student confrontations that call for immediate action from educational authorities and parents alike.

Three learners and the principal of Hoërskool Roodepoort sustained injuries during a fight involving students from West Ridge High School on Monday, 18 August 2025. The incident, which follows a previous altercation between the two schools, has raised serious concerns over student safety and discipline in Gauteng schools.

According to Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona, six Grade 12 boys from West Ridge High School have been identified as instigators and will receive suspension letters on Tuesday, pending their appearance before a disciplinary committee. Mabona indicated that further disciplinary actions may follow as evidence is still being verified.

The clash reportedly stemmed from an earlier conflict on Friday, 15 August 2025, which gained traction on social media. “Unfortunately, a group of West Ridge learners allegedly went there on a planned revenge, starting an outrageous attack on learners at Hoërskool Roodepoort, which included pelting cars with stones,” Mabona explained.

In the midst of the chaos, the principal of Hoërskool Roodepoort was injured while attempting to calm the situation. She was treated for stab wounds to her hand at a local medical facility before being discharged. Thankfully, although she suffered injuries, her condition is stable.

Meanwhile, three students from Hoërskool Roodepoort have been hospitalised and are currently receiving medical attention for their injuries. The distressing events have left both schools in turmoil, with many parents expressing their concerns over the rising trend of violence among learners.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging schools to strengthen their protocols and ensure the safety of all students. Mabona affirmed the commitment to maintaining a safe educational environment, stating, “We cannot allow such incidents to become the norm in our schools. We must work together to create a safe space for our learners.”
