The appearance of corruption-accused businessman Vusimuzi Cat Matlala at Parliament’s ad-hoc committee probing police corruption, held at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria, has ignited a flurry of discussion on social media.
During yesterday’s appearance, Matlala wore a white Burberry shirt, paired with brown pants, a belt, and shoes. The shirt alone is estimated to be worth R9,000, sparking controversy online. Today, he reportedly donned a luxury Fendi shirt, further fuelling debate about the appropriateness of such attire.
Social media users were divided over whether suspects facing serious charges should be allowed to flaunt expensive wardrobes during hearings.
- @SpheriFarmers commented: “This is the reason why society is messed up. You focus on vanity when the guy is a criminal.”
- @BlueSkye000 wrote: “Some alleged criminals show up dripping in designer clothes like they’re at Fashion Week, not facing fraud charges.”
- @Modise_Ntlou added: “People like Cat Matlala are organic skhothanes; they don’t have normal clothing that is quiet and doesn’t pull eyes. Everything of theirs is flamboyant.”
This trend is not new in South Africa. Convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester also drew public attention for his stylish and costly attire during court appearances.
The ongoing display of luxury fashion by suspects has led to calls for stricter dress regulations, with some advocating that accused individuals wear correctional services jumpsuits to avoid sending the wrong message about crime, particularly to young people.
Matlala is expected to continue his testimony before the committee, responding to allegations of corruption and his links to senior police officials.
