The Polygamist is quickly becoming one of South Africa’s most talked-about Netflix productions since Queen Sono. Following its global release on 12 June 2026, the drama surged to number one on Netflix’s South African Top 10 chart.
Based on the novel by Sue Nyathi, the series follows Jonas Gomora, a wealthy and successful businessman played by Sdumo Mtshali. On the surface, Jonas appears to have the perfect life — a thriving company, a beautiful home, and a devoted wife, Joyce Gomora, portrayed by Gugu Gumede.
But beneath the polished image lies a deeply flawed man driven by power, manipulation, and an endless appetite for women. Through flashbacks, viewers learn that Jonas’s behaviour did not begin with wealth and influence — even during his school years, he was already a serial womaniser.
At the heart of the story is Joyce’s refusal to leave her husband despite his repeated betrayals. Obsessed with maintaining her public image as a brand ambassador and the perfect wife, she endures humiliation after humiliation. As the series progresses, her silence becomes increasingly frustrating, to the point where viewers may stop sympathising with her altogether.
Jonas is manipulative, dishonest, and incapable of accepting rejection. He uses money, charm, and influence to control those around him, especially women. Yet despite his toxic behaviour, the character remains strangely charismatic and difficult to fully hate — one of the reasons the show has resonated so strongly with audiences.
Like many stories centred on addiction and unchecked power, the series becomes darker and more destructive towards the end, with relationships collapsing and lives spiralling out of control.
Outside of Netflix productions, The Polygamist deserves to be ranked alongside acclaimed South African dramas such as The Wife and Shaka iLembe.
The series has dominated conversations on social media, trending for days on X, with Jonas Gomora becoming a symbol of infidelity and toxic masculinity in modern relationships.
The 22-episode drama contains strong themes including substance abuse, violence and explicit sexual content. It is expected to break records as time goes on.
