Venezuela has commended Pretoria for an unwavering support and steadfastness against the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, last Saturday by US forces, and taken to New York to face trial on drug and weapons charges.

Venezuela Ambassador to South Africa Carlos Feo Acevedo told YOU FM and Newsnote on the sidelines of the ANC’s 114th Anniversary Celebrations at the Moruleng stadium outside Rustenburg in the North West that South Africa has firmly stood by his country during the most challenging times.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank South Africa and her people and the government for the strong support shown to Venezuela and its people during this difficult time.

The South African government has been very clear regarding what is happening in Venezuela.

The South African government released a statement on the same day after the invasion of Caracas and ultimate capture of President Maduro.

The statement also called for Maduro’s immediate release,” said the Ambassador

Feo Acevedo highlighted that the situation has started to return to normal since vice president and oil minister Delcy Rodriguez was sworn in on Monday as the country’s interim president, as U.S.-deposed Maduro is still in custody in New York.

Maduro’s abduction attracted a global outcry, condemnation, and calls for the immediate release of a duly democratically elected president.

Meanwhile, ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated ANC’s support to the people of Venezuela and others who are under attack worldwide.

“Across the world the values of equity, democracy, human solidarity, inclusion, gender equality and social justice are under attack.

It is also for this reason that we stand in solidarity with the peoples of Western Sahara, Cuba and Venezuela in their respective struggles to secure self-determination and sovereign integrity,” remarked Ramaphosa.
