Health authorities in India and neighbouring Asian countries are on high alert following a localised outbreak of the Nipah virus, a rare but often deadly infection that affects the brain.

Two cases have been confirmed in West Bengal, prompting intensified monitoring and public health measures. The virus is believed to originate in fruit bats and can spread from animals to humans, as well as between people.

World news correspondent Adam Gilchrist said the outbreak is concerning due to the virus’s high fatality rate and lack of a specific treatment or vaccine.

The illness typically begins with flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches and vomiting, but can rapidly worsen, leading to severe inflammation of the brain. Health experts estimate the fatality rate to be around 60%, making early detection and containment critical.

Authorities have urged vigilance while working to prevent further spread and to reassure the public as response measures continue.
