The high-profile attempted murder case against alleged crime boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his four co-accused has been postponed to Wednesday, 17 June 2026, after the defence requested additional evidence from the state.
The matter, which was due to continue in the Johannesburg High Court on Monday morning, was postponed after Matlala’s legal team argued that full disclosure had not yet been made by the prosecution.
Defence Seeks Further Disclosure
The defence is preparing a formal application to compel the state to provide outstanding material, including a statement allegedly made by a state witness to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), as well as Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) records from police vehicles used during Matlala’s arrest.
The court granted the postponement to allow both the defence and prosecution to complete pre-trial preparations and address outstanding disclosure issues.
Serious Charges Against Accused
Matlala, his wife Tsakani Matlala, and co-accused Musa Kekana, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, and Nthabiseng Nzama face a total of 25 charges.
These include 11 counts of attempted murder linked to three alleged shooting incidents between August 2022 and January 2024. The state alleges Matlala orchestrated failed assassination attempts targeting his former girlfriend, socialite Tebogo Thobejane, businessman Joe Sibanyoni, and music producer Seunkie Mokubung (DJ Vettys).
Additional charges include conspiracy to commit murder, fraud, and money laundering.
Matlala remains in custody at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre, while his wife is currently out on bail.
Next Court Appearance
The case will return to the Johannesburg High Court on Wednesday, 17 June 2026. The full trial is expected to begin on 20 July 2026.
