The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC) has officially launched the Mzansi World Cup Lucky Fans Competition ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June.
The initiative aims to give ordinary South Africans the opportunity to experience the tournament live, while proudly supporting the national team, Bafana Bafana.
The announcement follows DSAC’s decision to discontinue funding for trips traditionally allocated to well-known “super fans” within the sporting community. Minister Gayton McKenzie defended the move, stating that the funds would instead be redirected towards supporting athletes and other departmental priorities.
Despite public backlash, McKenzie maintains that the decision will ultimately benefit national teams, while promoting social cohesion and ensuring greater equality among supporters across all sporting codes.
In a statement released on Wednesday, DSAC encouraged fans to enter the competition, which opened on 29 April at 08:00 and will close on 1 May at 17:00.
According to the department, twenty passionate supporters will be selected to travel to either the United States or Mexico to attend one of Bafana Bafana’s group-stage matches. Fans representing all sixteen PSL clubs will be eligible, with additional wildcard entries included to ensure broader participation regardless of club affiliation.
To enter, members of the public must visit the official DSAC website and submit a 30-second video showcasing their passion for football, club loyalty, and reasons for wanting to represent South Africa on the global stage.
Following a judging process, Minister McKenzie and Deputy Minister Peace Mabe will announce the winners on 5 May 2026 at 08:00.
Successful entrants will receive a fully sponsored travel package, including international flights, accommodation, match tickets, and ground transport.
