With just 43 days remaining before the FIFA World Cup, Bafana Bafana have stepped up preparations as anticipation builds for their return to the global stage.

Head coach Hugo Broos says planning is now in full swing, with the technical team focused on detailed preparation, opposition analysis, and logistical arrangements ahead of the tournament.

Broos confirmed that scouting work on group-stage opponents, including Mexico, South Korea and the Czech Republic, is well underway. He also revealed that friendly matches against Nicaragua and possibly Puerto Rico are being arranged as part of final preparations.

A key feature of the build-up will be a high-altitude training camp in Pachuca, Mexico, which Broos described as essential for proper adaptation before the tournament begins.

“We need at least 10 days for altitude adaptation. If we arrive too late, preparation becomes too short,” he explained.

The opening group match against hosts Mexico is already generating significant attention, with supporters hopeful of a strong start in a challenging group. Travel logistics across multiple host cities, including Mexico City, Atlanta and Monterrey, are also being finalised.

Despite the scale of the challenge, Broos says belief within the squad is growing.

“More and more, I believe we can do something, that we can win points and go to the second round,” he said.

However, the coach faces tough selection decisions, with only 25 places available in the final squad.

“You can’t take everyone. It’s about balance, consistency and team structure,” Broos noted.

He also reflected on lessons from the Africa Cup of Nations, saying the team lost sharpness after qualifying for the World Cup, and emphasised the importance of maintaining focus and discipline.

Broos added that modern football demands not only technical ability but also physical strength, tactical discipline and consistency.

The tournament will also mark the end of his coaching career, with the 74-year-old confirming he will retire afterwards.

“I want to stop in a beautiful moment. Going to the World Cup, that is the perfect ending,” he said.

For South African fans, excitement continues to grow as Bafana Bafana prepare for what could be a defining moment on the world stage, with hopes of reaching the knockout rounds and restoring pride in national football.
