Mamelodi Sundowns produced a five-star performance to beat AmaZulu 5-2 in one of the most entertaining Betway Premiership matches of the season at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Wednesday night.
The victory lifted the African champions to second place on the league table, level on points with leaders Orlando Pirates, while AmaZulu suffered their first league defeat of the campaign but remain fourth.
Brayan Leon opened the scoring for Sundowns in the 25th minute with a stunning strike after Cassius Mailula’s effort deflected into his path.
Teboho Mokoena doubled the advantage seven minutes later, marking his return from injury with a thunderous curling free-kick that left AmaZulu goalkeeper Wilfried Kouassi with no chance.
AmaZulu came out strongly after the break and pulled one back through in-form striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya just a minute into the second half.
However, Sundowns quickly restored their two-goal cushion when Tashreeq Matthews found the back of the net in the 51st minute.
Leon then completed his brace in the 66th minute, with Matthews providing the assist, before Ngwenya responded four minutes later to make it 4-2.
The Zimbabwean’s second goal of the night took his league tally to five, making him the outright top scorer.
Bennet Mokoena then completed the rout in stoppage time. The 2025/26 DStv Diski Challenge Player of the Season and Golden Boot winner scored his first professional goal to seal a memorable 5-2 win.
Sundowns will now turn their attention to Sunday’s clash against Golden Arrows as they look to overturn a 1-0 deficit in the MTN8 semi-final.
AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane and his charges will prepare for the KZN Derby against Richards Bay on 4 September.
Arrows continue winning momentum
Golden Arrows carried their impressive MTN8 form into the Betway Premiership with a 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC at King Zwelithini Stadium.
Sede Junior Dion was again the hero for Abafana Bes’thende, scoring after coming off the bench.
The Ivorian-born forward had also scored the winner in Arrows’ weekend MTN8 victory over Sundowns.
Dion headed home Thokozani Khumalo’s cross in the 70th minute to secure Arrows’ first league win of the season.
The result moved Arrows up to sixth place, while Stellenbosch dropped to 11th after suffering their second defeat.
Stellenbosch will travel to face Durban City on 1 September, while Arrows will host Sundowns on 6 September.
Polokwane and Milford play out goalless draw
Polokwane City and newly promoted Milford FC played to a 0-0 draw at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
The result sees Milford maintain an impressive start to life in the top flight, with the newly promoted side sitting fifth on seven points from four matches.
Polokwane City have five points and occupy 10th place.
The match produced few clear chances, with both sides struggling to create openings in the final third.
Polokwane came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 84th minute when Manuel Kambala’s powerful effort from outside the box forced a sharp save from Milford goalkeeper Siphamandla Hleza.
Polokwane will travel to face Marumo Gallants next, while Milford visit Chippa United.
Chiefs and Richards Bay share four-goal thriller
Kaizer Chiefs and Richards Bay played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Princess Magogo Stadium.
Richards Bay took an early lead in the eighth minute after Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen made an error while attempting to play the ball out from the back.
Nqaba Xulu capitalised to give the home side the advantage.
Chiefs were awarded a penalty nine minutes later after Thembela Sikhakhane was penalised for handling the ball inside the area. Lebohang Maboe made no mistake from the spot to level the scores.
Richards Bay restored their lead shortly before half-time when Xulu scored his second goal of the night with a close-range header from a corner.
Chiefs fought back and eventually found an equaliser in the 77th minute through Siphesihle Ndlovu, who fired into the top corner after being set up by Asanele Velebayi.
Despite late pressure from Chiefs, Richards Bay held on for a point.
