Two suspects have been arrested in Sandton after allegedly impersonating public officials, driving under the influence of alcohol, and unlawfully using blue lights.

According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the arrests were made on Saturday, 2 May 2026, during routine patrols at the intersection of Rivonia Road and Grayston Drive.

Officers from the JMPD Crime Prevention Unit in Region E, together with the Tactical Response Unit, stopped a grey Haval vehicle fitted with unauthorised blue lights.

The male driver reportedly told officers he was the official driver for the Mayor of Nala Municipality and claimed he was transporting the mayor at the time. The female passenger supported the claim, identifying herself as the mayor and providing personal details.

However, police became suspicious after checking the vehicle details and discovering that it was not state-owned but registered to a bank.

Both suspects were taken to Sandton police station for further investigation.

Authorities later established that the woman had been impersonating the Mayor of Nala Municipality, while the driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol and in possession of illegal blue light equipment.

Police also indicated that the driver is allegedly affiliated with a political party in the Free State.

The driver now faces charges of impersonating a police official, driving under the influence, and unlawful use of blue lights. The female passenger has been charged with impersonation.

Both suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear in court soon.

The JMPD has commended its officers for their vigilance, warning that the misuse of blue lights is a serious offence that undermines law enforcement and public safety.
