Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Deputy Minister Dr Dickson Masemola has stressed the importance of empowering firefighters to serve communities with integrity, professionalism, and without fear or discrimination.

Masemola is leading a two-day national commemoration of International Firefighters’ Day 2026 at the Rustenburg Civic Centre in the North West.

The 2026 national commemoration is hosted in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Centre, the North West Provincial Disaster Management Centre, and other stakeholders.

The aim is, among other things, to honour firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty; celebrate the courage, discipline, and professionalism of South African firefighters; showcase operational readiness and specialised firefighting capabilities; and promote public awareness of fire safety and emergency preparedness.

Masemola told YOU FM Newshour that the government is working hard to ensure that firefighters are adequately supported through appropriate training, resources, and equipment, enabling them to perform their duties safely and effectively.

The Deputy Minister further called on municipalities and all spheres of government to strengthen coordination and collaboration to ensure sustainable institutional and financial support for fire and rescue services.

“These include enhancing staffing capacity, improving the placement and functionality of municipal fire services, and prioritising the wellbeing of firefighters,” said Masemola.

Masemola emphasised that while the day celebrates firefighters, it also solemnly remembers those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

“Today, we pause to honour the selflessness, courage, compassion, determination, and indomitable gallantry displayed by firefighters daily in the face of grave danger.

As first responders, firefighters’ work extends far beyond extinguishing flames.

They are protectors and pillars of resilience within communities during times of crisis, providing not only physical intervention but also reassurance, hope, and humanity to those in distress.

They are often the last line of defence when communities face their most vulnerable and life-threatening moments,” Masemola highlighted.

The department is currently reviewing the Disaster Management Policy Framework to strengthen rapid response capabilities, save lives, and build resilience in the face of disasters.

Government, in collaboration with the National Treasury, continues to explore improved funding models to reinforce public emergency and fire services across municipalities.

Deputy Minister Masemola also expressed gratitude to firefighters across the country.

“We extend our deepest gratitude.

Your bravery does not go unnoticed, your sacrifices do not go unappreciated, and your service remains an enduring source of national pride,” remarked Masemola.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting and strengthening the firefighting sector.
