The Commission’s Recommendations Investigative Task Team has brought fresh charges against suspended Organised Crime Unit Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, intensifying mounting legal pressure against the officer.
Nkosi is expected to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court today on allegations of defeating and obstructing the course of justice.
According to court documents, the new charges stem from a November 2022 arrest in Limpopo, where a suspect was allegedly found in possession of dagga, unlicensed firearms, and explosives.
Investigators claim Nkosi collected the original case docket from Thohoyandou police, allegedly stating he was acting under instructions from Head Office. Months later, he reportedly returned, identified himself as a Colonel, removed confiscated cannabis from police custody, and later booked the evidence into Head Office storage. Authorities further allege that one of the exhibit bags had been tampered with.
The latest developments add to a growing list of allegations facing Nkosi following his dramatic arrest in early April. During a raid at his Pretoria North residence, investigators allegedly uncovered multiple police dockets linked to closed cash-in-transit robbery and hijacking cases, along with a stun grenade, firearms, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and approximately R52 000 in cash hidden beneath a mattress.
Nkosi already faces multiple charges, including unlawful possession of explosives, theft, money laundering, failure to secure firearms, and additional counts of defeating the ends of justice.
His bail application was denied on 22 April, and he remains behind bars. Nkosi was suspended in late March following explosive testimony presented at the Madlanga Commission. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
