Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus is set to receive one of South Africa’s highest honours in recognition of his contribution to rugby and nation-building.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will present Erasmus with the Order of Ikhamanga during an investiture ceremony on 19 May.
The announcement was made on Thursday by Chancellor of the National Orders Phindile Baleni, who confirmed Erasmus would be among 40 recipients honoured this year.
The Order of Ikhamanga recognises South Africans who have achieved excellence in fields such as sport, arts, culture and journalism.
Baleni praised Erasmus for his influence both on and off the rugby field during the Springboks’ recent era of dominance.
“His inspirational leadership in national and international rugby has propelled the Springboks to repeated Rugby World Cup victories,” she said.
“Success on the field of play has strengthened social cohesion among South Africans and enhanced the country’s standing in the international community.”
Erasmus guided South Africa to Rugby World Cup triumphs in 2019 and 2023, helping the Springboks become the first nation to win four world titles.
The National Orders honour individuals who have made exceptional contributions towards building a democratic and united South Africa.
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi received the same honour in 2023 ahead of the Rugby World Cup in France, where the Springboks successfully defended their title.
