The North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety and Transport Management has expressed concern over a rise in violent crime in the province following the murder of Mahikeng community activist Thato Molosankwe.
Molosankwe was shot and killed at his home in Lomanyaneng near Mahikeng in the early hours of Wednesday morning, an incident that has sparked renewed calls for stronger policing and improved intelligence capacity.
Committee chairperson Freddy Sonakile has urged law enforcement to work swiftly to apprehend those responsible, extending condolences to Molosankwe’s family, friends and community.
Sonakile said Molosankwe was well known to the committee and frequently shared information on community issues, often calling for government intervention on matters affecting residents.
He described the activist as a committed advocate for ordinary people, noting his role in peaceful protests at the North West Legislature and his efforts to keep communities informed through social media.
While acknowledging he was not without flaws, Sonakile said Molosankwe’s dedication to justice and accountability should be remembered and not lost in vain.
The committee has also called for a review of police intelligence capabilities, warning that stronger preventative measures are needed to curb serious and violent crime in the province.
