The Special Provincial Official Funeral of former North West Premier Kaobitsa “Bushy” Maape is taking place in Huhudi, outside Vryburg, on Saturday morning, with mourners gathering to honour his life and legacy.

Maape passed away last Saturday following a short illness at a Johannesburg hospital. His death continues to prompt widespread tributes from political leaders, government officials and community members across the province and beyond.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile is delivering the eulogy at the funeral service, which is attended by members of the Provincial Executive Council, mayors and other dignitaries.

Maape served as Premier of the North West and is being remembered as a committed public servant who contributed significantly to governance and community development.

Chairperson of the ANC Veterans League in the Naledi Sub-region, Skipa Seimelo, described Maape as a pillar of strength within the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality. He said Maape remained steadfast in his fight against crime, discrimination and inequality throughout his political career.

Huhudi resident Raymond Villa also paid tribute, describing the late former premier as a dedicated leader who brought meaningful change to the community. Villa said the province has lost a giant and an activist whose impact will be felt for years to come.
