Three foreign nationals are expected to appear before the Musina Magistrates Court on Friday following a major drug interception at the Beitbridge Border Post, where authorities say a sophisticated cross-border smuggling operation was uncovered.

The suspects were arrested after a truck travelling from Malawi was stopped by the Border Management Authority (BMA) while attempting to enter South Africa.

The case forms part of a broader crackdown on organised drug syndicates operating across southern African borders, following similar recent discoveries in other parts of the country.

Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber and BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato said the vehicle was scanned using South African Revenue Service (SARS) technology, which flagged a hidden compartment within the truck.

Officials spent around eight hours dismantling the vehicle before uncovering a steel-sealed compartment containing 28 unmarked bags of methaqualone, weighing approximately 713,000 grams.

Authorities described the concealment method as highly sophisticated, indicating a coordinated criminal network rather than opportunistic smuggling.

The seized substance is believed to be a precursor used in the production of mandrax, raising concerns that it may have been intended for further processing within South Africa.

The accused include a Malawian man, a Malawian woman, and a Zambian man. Investigations are ongoing to establish the final destination of the consignment and identify additional role-players in the network.

Law enforcement agencies say the bust highlights increased efforts to strengthen border security and disrupt transnational drug trafficking routes across the region.
