Canada salvaged a valuable 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their Group B World Cup opener on Friday, with substitute Cyle Larin coming off the bench to rescue a point for the tournament co-hosts.

The Canadians looked destined for defeat for much of the contest after Bosnia took an early lead, but Larin’s late intervention ensured Canada began their campaign with a share of the spoils in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

Bosnia and Herzegovina struck first in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukic netted his maiden international goal. The forward reacted quickest to a flick-on from a corner, steering the ball into the net to put his side ahead.

Canada responded positively and dominated large periods of the match, creating several promising opportunities as they searched for an equaliser.

Their best chance arrived in the 53rd minute when Richie Laryea looked certain to score. However, Bosnia defender Sead Kolasinac produced a remarkable goal-line intervention, diverting Laryea’s effort onto the crossbar and away from danger.

The hosts continued to press forward relentlessly, peppering the Bosnia penalty area with crosses and attacks. Despite their dominance in possession and chances created, Canada struggled to find the finishing touch as Bosnia’s defence held firm.

With time running out, head coach Jesse Marsch turned to experienced striker Cyle Larin in the 76th minute, and the move paid immediate dividends.

Less than three minutes after entering the match, Larin showed his composure inside the penalty area, turning sharply before firing a shot that took a deflection on its way into the net to level the score at 1-1.

The equaliser sparked celebrations among the home supporters and capped a determined Canadian performance that deserved at least a point.

While Canada may feel they could have taken all three points given their attacking display, Larin’s late strike ensured they avoided an opening-match defeat and maintained momentum heading into their remaining Group B fixtures.
