Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has written to President Cyril Ramaphosa requesting the implementation of a cabinet reshuffle affecting the party’s representation in the Government of National Unity (GNU).
If approved, the changes would see former DA leader John Steenhuisen moved from his current position as Minister of Agriculture to Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition.
According to Hill-Lewis, Steenhuisen will be replaced by the current Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Willie Aucamp.
“It is my judgement that the renewed team announced today will strengthen the DA’s contribution to government and give better effect to the mandate received from 3.5 million voters in the 2024 elections,” he said.
Hill-Lewis noted that during his tenure, Steenhuisen had led efforts to expand market access for South African agricultural products and made progress in the procurement and distribution of vaccines for Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).
He added that Aucamp’s immediate priority would be to resolve ongoing legal matters relating to FMD, work with the sector to address the crisis, and restore confidence through accelerated practical measures to bring the outbreak under control.
The DA leader expressed confidence that Aucamp would continue efforts to open new markets for South Africa’s agricultural products, supporting economic growth and job creation.
Further changes will see David Maynier replacing Aucamp, while Steenhuisen will take up Maynier’s previous position.
Alexandra Abrahams will be appointed Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, with Hill-Lewis describing her as bringing “tenacity, discipline and a reform-minded approach” to a key growth portfolio.
Yusuf Cassim, who has served on Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and has a background in student politics, will become Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training.
Jack Bloom, the longest-serving member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and a long-time advocate for good governance, will be appointed Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation.
Hill-Lewis said the changes reflect the party’s values in action and will strengthen its ability to deliver on its vision for South Africa.
