The Springboks may have kicked off their 2026 season with an emphatic 80-31 victory over the Barbarians, but head coach Rassie Erasmus believes the performance exposed areas that require urgent attention ahead of next month’s clash against England.
South Africa delivered an entertaining attacking display at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Saturday, running in 12 tries in front of a jubilant crowd. However, Erasmus was quick to point out that defensive lapses and discipline issues prevented the performance from being complete.
Despite scoring 80 points, the Springboks conceded five tries, with the Barbarians capitalising on several defensive errors. Erasmus said yellow cards and moments of ill-discipline allowed the visitors to score in quick succession, highlighting areas the squad must address before tougher opposition arrives.
The victory marked South Africa’s first match together in more than six months, with several players returning from club commitments and others making their first appearances in the national setup.
While the attacking cohesion impressed, Erasmus warned against reading too much into the scoreline, noting that the Barbarians had limited preparation time and are notoriously unpredictable due to their free-flowing style of play.
The only significant setback for the world champions was an injury concern involving veteran lock Franco Mostert, who left the field with an ankle problem and will undergo further medical assessment.
Meanwhile, South Africa A also enjoyed a successful start to their campaign, defeating Zimbabwe 40-0. Coach Mzwandile Stick praised his side’s resilience, particularly given that many of the players had never previously played together.
Stick highlighted the team’s defensive effort after keeping Zimbabwe scoreless despite facing sustained physical pressure throughout the match.
Attention now turns to the upcoming Nations Championship, where the Springboks will open their campaign against England in Johannesburg on 4 July. Erasmus has already named an expanded 46-man squad as preparations intensify for what is expected to be a far sterner examination than Saturday’s season opener.
The convincing victories provided a positive foundation, but both coaching staffs agree that the real challenges are still to come.
