The North West Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS) has expressed its appreciation to all stakeholders and community members for their compliance and support during the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa’s first voter registration weekend in the province.
However, the structure confirmed that four individuals were arrested in connection with election-related incidents over the weekend.
“The first incident was reported at Klipgat informal settlement near Klerksdorp, where police arrested two suspects, aged 38 and 48, as well as a 16-year-old minor, for public violence after they allegedly attempted to prevent a voting station from opening on Saturday, 20 June 2026,” said SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh.
Myburgh further stated that another suspect was arrested in Wolmaransstad on the same day after allegedly threatening an Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) official and instructing the official to close and vacate the voting station. “The suspect has been charged with intimidation in terms of the Electoral Act, Act 73 of 1998. All four suspects are expected to appear in court in due course.”
In addition, no election-related incidents were reported on the second day of the voter registration weekend, despite persistent rainfall that created accessibility challenges at some voting stations.
Acting Provincial Police Commissioner Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo emphasised that the successful conclusion of the voter registration weekend demonstrated the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies, government stakeholders, and communities.
Meanwhile, PROVJOINTS has also reassured residents of the North West of its operational readiness to uphold and enforce the law during the anticipated nationwide march against illegal immigrants.
“As we approach the march period, we remain committed to sustaining the momentum achieved through our collective efforts. Continued cooperation and vigilance from communities, together with the dedication of all role players, are critical in maintaining stability, combating crime, and ensuring a safe and secure environment for all residents of the North West Province,” said Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo.
