The South African Revenue Service (SARS) will automatically assess around six million taxpayers when the 2026 tax filing season opens on 1 July, as it expands digital services to simplify the filing process.

Taxpayers selected for auto-assessment are encouraged to check their status through SARS’ online platforms between 1 and 12 July instead of visiting branches.

The revenue service has also introduced a new WhatsApp channel, allowing taxpayers to access assessments and other services remotely as part of efforts to improve customer experience and reduce queues at SARS offices.

According to SARS, qualifying taxpayers who accept their assessments and have valid banking details could receive refunds within 72 hours.

SARS Commissioner Ngobani Johnstone Makhubu urged taxpayers to avoid rushing to branches during the initial auto-assessment period.

He said taxpayers should wait until after 12 July to receive official correspondence before seeking assistance, adding that the enhanced digital systems are designed to make the filing season more efficient while supporting higher levels of voluntary tax compliance.
