Mexico secured a commanding 2–0 win over Ecuador to book their place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, delivering a landmark knockout-stage victory on home soil.
The co-hosts made a fast start at the Azteca Stadium, with Julián Quiñones opening the scoring in the 22nd minute. Driving in from the left flank, he cut into the box and fired a precise finish inside the near post to put Mexico ahead.
Just minutes later, Raúl Jiménez doubled the advantage after combining brilliantly with Quiñones. The striker played a quick one-two before smashing a powerful effort into the top right corner, giving Ecuador’s goalkeeper no chance.
Mexico went into halftime with a 2–0 lead and controlled the match with discipline and structure. While Ecuador dominated possession in the second half, they struggled to create clear-cut chances against a well-organised Mexican defence. The result also extended Mexico’s impressive defensive record in the tournament, as they once again kept a clean sheet.
Tensions rose in stoppage time when Ecuador defender Piero Hincapié was shown a red card for covering his mouth during an on-field exchange.
The match had been delayed by one hour due to adverse weather conditions around the stadium, but Mexico maintained focus despite the disruption.
With the win, Mexico advance to the last 16 and will face either England or the Democratic Republic of Congo in their next knockout fixture at the same venue on Sunday.
