Typhoon Bavi weakened to a severe tropical storm after making landfall in eastern China’s Zhejiang province, but it continued to bring strong winds and heavy rain across eastern China on Sunday.
The storm weakened early on Sunday, with maximum sustained winds of around 101 km/h (63 mph) near its centre, according to China’s National Meteorological Centre. It is expected to continue moving north-westwards across eastern China.
Bavi passed north of Taiwan on Saturday without making direct landfall, according to The Associated Press.
Taiwan’s fire department said that at least 134 people across the island had been injured by 7 a.m. on Sunday. Some were hurt while riding motorcycles or bicycles in strong winds, while others sustained injuries after slipping on wet road surfaces.
Strong winds and heavy rainfall are expected to affect many cities across eastern China throughout Sunday, the National Meteorological Centre said.
State media reported that Shanghai evacuated more than 290,000 people from at-risk areas. Authorities in Zhejiang relocated around 2.2 million residents, while more than 180,000 people were evacuated from Fujian province.
Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao International Airport were expected to cancel around 653 inbound and outbound flights because of Bavi, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.
In the coastal city of Yueqing, in Zhejiang province, more than 1,300 trees were brought down, including at least 700 that were uprooted, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
