Residents in parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the North West may experience low or intermittent water supply this weekend as Rand Water and Eskom undertake Phase Two of planned infrastructure maintenance from Friday to Sunday, between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm.

The work follows Phase One of the maintenance programme, which was carried out between May and June this year.

According to Rand Water, Phase Two will include Eskom’s maintenance of the electrical infrastructure at the Zuikerbosch Water Purification Plant, as well as the completion of cross-connections between old and new pipelines.

Customers have been warned to expect possible water supply disruptions during the maintenance period.

“System pumping capacity will be reduced, with the Palmiet system operating at 78% capacity, the Zwartkopjes system at 50%, and the Eikenhof system at 55%. Pumping at the Mapleton system will be suspended for 12 hours while maintenance is carried out,” Rand Water said.

The utility also urged municipalities to communicate proactively with residents and implement temporary water management measures to minimise the impact of the planned maintenance.

Areas expected to be affected include the Cities of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, as well as the Midvaal, Victor Khanye, Govan Mbeki, Lesedi, Thembisile Hani, Mogale City, Rand West, Merafong, Madibeng and Rustenburg local municipalities. Mines, businesses and key customers, including Airports Company South Africa, are also expected to be affected.

Rand Water has assured customers that it will provide regular updates through its official communication channels. It also appealed to residents to use water sparingly and remain patient while system pressure is gradually restored across the affected areas.
