The South African Police Service (SAPS) has appointed Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams as the new North West Provincial Commissioner, placing one of the organisation’s most experienced operational commanders at the forefront of efforts to combat organised crime in the province.
Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane officially introduced Adams in Mahikeng on Thursday, confirming that he will assume office on 1 August 2026.
Dimpane said Adams was appointed following a transparent, merit-based selection process designed to identify a leader capable of addressing the province’s complex crime challenges.
She said North West remains a key battleground in the fight against illegal mining and continues to face serious threats, including cash-in-transit robberies, stock theft, drug trafficking, illegal firearms and organised cross-border crime.
Describing Adams as one of SAPS’ most specialised operational commanders, Dimpane said his 34 years of policing experience and extensive tactical expertise made him well suited to lead crime-fighting operations in the province.
Among his priorities will be strengthening policing across North West’s five districts and 86 police stations, improving operational readiness, enhancing intelligence-led policing and restoring public confidence in law enforcement.
Dimpane said the appointment reflects SAPS’ commitment to strengthening leadership and improving public safety in one of South Africa’s most crime-affected provinces.
She also thanked Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Dr Ryno Naidoo for providing stable leadership since the post became vacant in 2024 and for ensuring continuity in policing services during the transition.
