The South African Football Association’s (SAFA) National Executive Committee has approved the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana coach, replacing Hugo Broos.
The approval was made during an NEC Extraordinary Meeting at SAFA House in Nasrec on Saturday.
The decision comes a few days after Broos stepped down following his success in guiding the team to the second round of the recent FIFA World Cup after a 1-0 victory over South Korea in Monterrey, Mexico.
“The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends.
“We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week,” said SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan.
SAFA is optimistic that Mosimane can build on the team’s recent success after it qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 24 years and made history at the 2026 global showpiece.
Mosimane, a former Bafana player, was an assistant coach to Carlos Alberto Parreira during the 2010 World Cup before being promoted to head coach.
He was, however, dismissed in 2012 following a disappointing spell with the team and its failure to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The 62-year-old later enjoyed a successful stint with Mamelodi Sundowns, winning the domestic league and CAF Champions League, before joining Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he also won the domestic league and CAF Champions League.
