Canada is preparing to announce further measures against the United States after President Donald Trump introduced new tariffs, escalating tensions between the two long-standing trading partners.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to outline Canada’s response after Ottawa rejected what he described as a “bad deal” during negotiations with Washington.
The latest US tariffs affect a range of Canadian products, while Trump has also threatened to increase tariffs on Canadian vehicles. Canada has announced retaliatory measures targeting US steel and dairy products, as well as agricultural equipment, paper and electronics.
The dispute comes as both countries face negotiations over the future of the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement.
Carney has maintained that Canada will prioritise protecting its workers and businesses while diversifying its international trade relationships.
The escalating dispute is raising concerns about jobs, investment and economic stability on both sides of the border, with Canada heavily dependent on the US market.
