One driver has died after the vehicle he was travelling in collided head-on with a loaded truck transporting steel pipes and caught fire on the N1 North, near Mekete Lodge, Polokwane.

Authorities say the victim, who was driving a Volkswagen Polo, was attempting to overtake when the accident occurred. He died at the scene.

No injuries were reported among the occupants of the truck.

“The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety informs motorists that the N1 North, near Mekete Lodge, Polokwane, has been cleared and is now open to traffic following a motor vehicle accident that occurred this morning.

“The department extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time,” said department spokesperson Mashudu Mabata.

Meanwhile, the department has warned motorists of heavy traffic volumes expected this coming weekend due to the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) pilgrimage in Moria.

The ZCC, under the leadership of His Grace Bishop Dr B.E. Lekganyane, is holding its New Year Consecration Conference in Moria.

“We are expecting more than 4,000 buses from all corners of the country, as well as minibuses from neighbouring countries, including Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

“Buses are expected to start moving towards Moria on Friday after 23:00.

“Motorists are urged to exercise patience, avoid speeding, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and adhere to instructions from law enforcement,” appealed Mabata.
