Mamelodi Sundowns have defeated Orlando Pirates 2-0 in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, ending the Buccaneers’ reign as champions of the competition.
The Brazilians secured the victory in front of a capacity crowd, with Teboho Mokoena opening the scoring in the 11th minute before Iqraam Rayners converted a late penalty to seal the result.
The win marks Sundowns’ first MTN8 title since 2021, while Pirates’ bid for a fifth consecutive crown ended in defeat.
Mokoena gives Sundowns an early lead
Sundowns made an early impact when Mokoena found the back of the net in the 11th minute, giving his side a 1-0 advantage.
The early goal provided the Brazilians with a platform as both teams competed for control of the final.
Orlando Pirates entered the match seeking to extend their recent success in the competition, but Sundowns held on to their advantage before Rayners’ penalty in the closing moments confirmed the 2-0 victory.
Matthews named Player of the Match
Sundowns winger Tashreeq Matthews was named Player of the Match following the final.
The award capped a successful outing for the Pretoria-based club, which added another domestic cup triumph to its record.
For Pirates, the result brought their pursuit of a fifth successive MTN8 title to an end.
Sundowns’ victory also sees the club return to the top of the competition after last winning the trophy in 2021.
The 2-0 result at Moses Mabhida Stadium confirmed Sundowns as the 2026 MTN8 champions.
