Cristiano Ronaldo could face a lengthy suspension after the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) provisionally suspended the veteran forward following his departure from the national team camp amid a reported dispute over playing time.
The 41-year-old’s case has been referred to the FPF’s Disciplinary Investigation Commission, with the federation classifying the proceedings as urgent. The decision follows an incident ahead of Portugal’s Nations League clash against Denmark.
Ronaldo reportedly became frustrated after being left on the bench against Norway, accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of failing to honour promises regarding his playing time. He subsequently left the squad, triggering disciplinary action.
Ronaldo Could Face Months on the Sidelines
The FPF’s disciplinary regulations state that players who abandon or fail to attend national team activities without justification can face suspensions ranging from one to six months, in addition to a fine.
However, the potential punishment facing Ronaldo remains uncertain. Although he reportedly informed the federation of his departure, the disciplinary commission must determine whether his actions were justified under the applicable rules.
No final sanction has been announced, and the details of the investigation will remain confidential until the proceedings conclude.
Portugal Star Apologises After Controversy
Ronaldo has reportedly apologised to his teammates and supporters, acknowledging that leaving the national team camp was a mistake. He has also indicated that he is prepared to accept whatever punishment the federation imposes.
Despite the controversy, the forward has reiterated his desire to continue representing Portugal.
Ronaldo Returns to Scoring for Al Nassr
Away from international duty, Ronaldo returned to action for Al Nassr on Friday, scoring in a 3-0 victory over Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League.
The goal took his reported career tally to 980, bringing him closer to the milestone of 1,000 career goals.
While Ronaldo continues to deliver on the pitch at club level, the outcome of the FPF investigation could affect his availability for upcoming international fixtures.
