Orlando Pirates moved to the top of the Betway Premiership table in style after securing an impressive 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The defeat marked Amakhosi’s first league loss of the 2026/27 season under new coach Fernando Da Cruz. For the Buccaneers, it was their eighth win in nine matches.

FNB Stadium was packed to capacity, with supporters from both sides creating an electric atmosphere. Many fans remained on their feet throughout the match, singing and chanting in support of their favourite players.

Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry was also in attendance. He received loud cheers when he stepped onto the pitch to greet supporters.

The players lived up to the occasion, serving up an entertaining contest filled with attacking football and clear-cut chances. Both sides missed opportunities to add to the scoreline, but the spectacle delivered value for money for supporters who had travelled from other provinces to witness one of Africa’s biggest sporting events.

Stadium management and law enforcement also appeared to have improved their organisation compared with previous derbies.

Pirates entered the match as favourites, given their impressive form and recent results. Many expected them to dominate Chiefs, who had been inconsistent across the competitions they were contesting.

However, Amakhosi had other ideas. Despite being considered underdogs, they fought hard and created opportunities that could have seen them take all three points had they been more clinical in front of goal.

After a series of missed chances, Yanela Mbuthuma opened the scoring for Pirates when his effort took a deflection off a Chiefs defender and found the back of the net, leaving goalkeeper Brandon Petersen with little chance.

Chiefs responded with an equaliser after Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine failed to hold a routine catch, allowing striker Pule Mmodi to collect the loose ball and slot it home.

However, Tshepang Moremi had the final say, finding the net with a simple tap-in to secure all three points for the Buccaneers and hand them the bragging rights once again.

Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou experienced the full emotional weight of the derby. His reaction after Moremi missed a clear-cut opportunity — throwing himself to the ground face-first — captured the tension and drama of the occasion.
