The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) in KwaZulu-Natal has called for an urgent and impartial investigation into the killing of its regional organiser, Lastborn Shazi, who was reportedly shot dead at his home in the province.

Shazi was allegedly shot at his residence in the Umzumbe sub-region, within the Ugu District, on Monday.

In a media statement issued on Tuesday, the party described his death as a devastating loss to the organisation, his family and the communities he served.

The MKP has called on the Provincial Killings Task Team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

“The Party calls on the Provincial Killings Task Team to urgently investigate this shooting, establish the circumstances surrounding his death and ensure that the shooter, together with anyone found to have been involved in planning or facilitating this killing, is identified and brought to justice,” the statement reads.

The party also raised concerns about the history of political killings in KwaZulu-Natal, saying the continued loss of lives through violence requires decisive action from law enforcement authorities.

The MKP has urged its members and supporters to remain calm and allow the police to carry out their investigation without interference.

“Members are urged not to engage in speculation, spread unverified information or make allegations that could compromise the investigation and inflame tensions,” the party said.

The organisation confirmed that funeral and memorial arrangements would be communicated after consultations with Shazi’s family.

It also appealed to the public and party supporters to respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.

In paying tribute to the slain organiser, the party said his contribution to the organisation and the struggle would not be forgotten.

“Hamba kahle, Comrade Lastborn Shazi. Zindela Bombo! Your contribution to the organisation and the struggle will not be forgotten.”
