Ngaka Modiri Molema seeks intervention for water crisis

Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality will seek intervention from the Minister of Water and Sanitation to address water challenges in the district.

This was revealed on Wednesday during an assessment visit to the Mmabatho Waste Water Plant and the Mmabatho Water Plant by new Executive Mayor, Khumalo Molefe, and Mahikeng Local Municipality Mayor, Tshepiso Mphehlo.

Residents in Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality and in Mahikeng Local Municipality have been experiencing water interruptions and when taps flow they produce water that is brown in colour.

Molefe said despite interventions to resolve water challenges in the district, there is still no solution.

“We want to do a proper assessment. If we have internal capacity we must use it. However, if we don’t have internal capacity, our intention is to get the Minister for Water and Sanitation, so that he sends capacity to come and assist us.

“But generally assessment at face value is that there are too many hands on one problem. You have Sedibeng dealing with the same problem, you have Mahikeng, you have Ngaka Modiri Molema, and then you have consultants. So we want to deal with that particular problem,” Molefe said.

Mphehlo appealed for the refurbishment of water treatment plants.

“All of our plants that are supposed to feed our people with water don’t work. The other one can only supply 25% of water, while the other one supplies 30%. So it speaks also to the quality of water that we have at our households. I believe that as deployees of the African National Congress we have a responsibility to render services to the people. One of those important services is provision of clean water, certainly not the brown like colour water that our people are currently provided with.

“These are some of the things that we need to change for our people to be happy with the services rendered to them. We will do our best to ensure that services are rendered to our people,” said Mphehlo.

The two mayors said they will soon meet Sedibeng Water and other stakeholders in a bid to resolve the water crisis in the district.
