ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has confirmed that the party has terminated the membership of former North West provincial chairperson and Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL), Kgosi Kwena Mangope. His removal also results in his dismissal from the legislature.
According to Mashaba, the decision followed months of engagement between the party’s national leadership and Mangope, who has been accused of failing to fulfil his responsibilities as ActionSA’s representative in the North West Legislature and neglecting his constituency duties across the province.
Mashaba told Newsnote that the matter was formally referred to ActionSA’s disciplinary committee, under the party’s senate, for intervention in October. He added that despite several attempts to reach Mangope — including efforts to personally offer condolences after the passing of his wife — Mangope remained unresponsive.
The party further accuses Mangope of prolonged absenteeism from official duties without providing explanation. Mashaba revealed that their disciplinary committee contacted the Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature and discovered that Mangope had missed 15 sittings without submitting apologies either to the legislature or to the party.
In addition, Mashaba said Mangope failed to support ActionSA councillors in the province, despite being tasked with assisting them as part of the leadership agreement following the merger with Forum 4 Service Delivery. Instead, councillors reportedly escalated their concerns directly to national leadership.
After unsuccessful attempts to meet Mangope, Mashaba enlisted ActionSA national chairperson Michael Beaumont to secure a discussion. During that meeting, Mashaba said he expressed sympathy for Mangope’s personal loss but emphasized the party’s constitutional obligations, suggesting Mangope temporarily step aside to grieve while allowing continuity in leadership. Mangope initially agreed to resign within a week but later sent an email accusing the party of insensitivity.
Following his failure to resign as agreed, ActionSA’s senate resolved to terminate his membership and remove him from his MPL position.
