ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba says the party’s senate, the highest decision-making body of the party, will collate the numbers and consider other factors to determine if the party is ready to go to the much-awaited national elective conference or not.

According to Mashaba, the party’s interim constitution had initially ordered that the elective conference be held nine months after the general elections, but this was not the case.

Mashaba was speaking during a special broadcast of the You FM’s Current Affairs Programme, You FM Newshour at the station’s Northriding studios in Johannesburg.

“I think it is actually quite interesting that when I launched this party, because I know a lot of political guys who have been in politics for a lot of time they said Herman please when you put together a constitution make sure that the last thing that you must avoid is to go into a conference.

Until such time that you have strong membership, you’ve got branches, because the quickest way to destroy this project of yours is to go to a conference with the Mashaba clan,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba founded the party in August 2020, following the People’s Dialogue, a 9-month public engagement process which solicited the views of 2.4 million South Africans about the future of the country.

He highlighted that the senate has the power to change some conventions of the interim constitution.

“As a senate we have the prerogative to change it in the event (that) we don’t have branches, we don’t have the membership.

Because we discovered our membership, some people when we consulted them just before the elections some people had already passed away, but they were our members.

A lot of people that we consulted couldn’t even remember if they’re members of ActionSA or not,” explained Mashaba.

The party received 413 239 votes, translating to 1.2% with 6 seats at the National Assembly in the May 29th general elections.
