South Africa’s influential and internationally recognized genre of Amapiano was the most listened to this year in the country.
This is according to music streaming platform, Spotify in its yearly Wrapped compilation of music and artists that were most played.
Spotify also noted a 93% increase in local music consumption for 2024.
Amongst the top 10 artists that were the most streamed in Mzansi this year was Drake, Chris Brown, DJ Maphorisa and Kelvin Momo.
The King of the Yanos Kabza de Small topped album streams with Isimo which surpassed the 10 million mark.
Tyla with her self-titled album also made it to the top 10 of most streamed albums in Mzansi this year, including Kelvin Momo with Kurhula, SZA with SOS, Chris Brown’s 11:11 and Afro Pop musician Mlindo The Vocalist with his 2018 studio Album, Emakhaya.
The top 10 of the most streamed songs is made up of a significant portion of Amapiano bangers like Yebo Labo by Felo Le Tee featuring DJ Maphorisa, Amalobola by Kelvin Momo, Stixx and Nia Pearl, Uncle Waffles’ Wadibusa alongside Royal MusiQ and OH Pcee and at number one Imithandazo by Kabza De Small featuring Young Stunna, Maphorisa, Sizwe Alakine and Umthakathi Kush.
The 2024 Spotify Wrapped marks the 10th year since its inception and the streaming services took pride in the campaign.
“The 2024 Wrapped design is the result of a tremendous collaborative effort and we’re incredibly proud of the outcome. While we say this every year, this year’s design truly stands apart from anything we’ve done before,” read a statement from Spotify.
Moreover, the list has inspired social media users to create their own personal 2024 Wrapped catalogues, with people using songs from their favourite artists to reflect on everything 2024 had to offer.
